GRASS ROOT KEY TO SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

Looking critically at the recently concluded Olympic games,it is a great shame to the giant of Africa not to come home with a single medal,why is this so?
sports development in Nigeria is very poor,we really need to go back to the grassroots.Only if the nation can go back to the basics of scouting athlete from schools and embarking on grass root programmes will they be able to keep getting quality athlete in the Nigerian sports cycle.
The call is on federal government,they really need to re-evaluate their steps in ensuring continuous and sustainable supply of quality athlete to the Nigerian sports team by establishing various grass roots programmes that would facilitate proper sport development in the country.Because there is no more grassroots that's why we are where we are today,today everything is falling,our football is falling,just recently Nigeria was rated by FIFA as the third ,worst developing soccer country in the world and that means things are not going in the right direction and we need to go back to the grass root
The ministry of education and school authorities should ensure a healthy sporting curriculum in their syllabus and make sure schools do not only teach mathematics,English,chemistry e.t.c,but should also attempt to inculate good physical and sport education.let look around Nigeria now,every four bedroom flat,every abandoned building has been turned into schools,no play ground for children to play,no training pitches and from there they jump to televisions and computers and by the time they get on the field practically,they are already 17 to 18 years old,where as a 17 year old boy is playing professional football for a country like England already.
i just hope the ministry of sports and education will work hand in hand to develop these kids and use example of schools like oxford and Cambridge who are not only outstanding for their academics progress but also their sporting excellence.
we must go back to the drawing board and go back to the grass root,only then will we achieve what we want in sport and our loving fans will stop to lament.
