Science More Fun in Los Baños

LAGUNA, Philippines, July 19 -- The Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI) launched its annual science festival, SyenSaya which theme is “Mas Masaya Sa Syensaya” this year, at the Baker Hall, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) from July 18-20, 2012 to showcase newest discoveries in science and technology, and latest research updates.

“SyenSaya started way back in 2008, UPLB’s centennial year, and was organized by the LBSCFI with the help of Luis Rey Velasco, UPLB’s current chancellor. It was created in response to the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration which occurs every second week of July.”, said Florante Cruz, University Researcher and Member Coordinator Exhibit Committee.

The main component of SyenSaya is the “Wonderama.” It is a 3-day exhibit where latest innovations in science applied in various sectors, particularly in agriculture, were presented. Aside from this, different activities such as forums, awarding ceremony and seminars were also held during the event. It was conducted in Los Baños, Laguna, the "Special Science and Nature City of the Philippines”.

“For me, SyenSaya should continue because there are things we learned here that were not taught in school.”, said Camille Lingad, second year high school student of Laguna College.

According to Florante Cruz, the continuance of SyenSaya will depend on LBSCFI’s dedication in promoting science education and in disseminating newest research outputs. As long as the association is committed on their goals, the science festival will continue.

SyenSaya was funded by the members of the LBSCFI. It was also supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through its Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI).
