University Students Act For Indonesia and The People
DEPOK, Indonesia, Nov. 23 -- They call themselves as the agent of change. The future of Indonesia lay in their hands. They move, protest, against unfairness, fight for people, fight for something they believe that can bring prosperity for every citizen, especially the poor ones. They are university students.
“So, is it just about protest and demonstration?” I asked to one of my friends. I always discuss about this topic to students who identify themselves as the movement cadres. They answers are typically the same, “Who will watch and guard the elites who do tyrannically? Who will proclaim the people’s voices when the policies don’t stand beside them? Us! That’s why we move! That’s why we protest! That’s why we demonstrate!”
Seems so noble, right? Why do they want to act like this? Doing a long march, yelling ‘till their voice is lost, even sacrifice their body to be hit and bleed by the security guards. Is it worth?
INDONESIA is the answer. They found that there’s something wrong with the government in Indonesia. Corruption is in everywhere. The people who has power to control this country, is just busy with his personal impression in front of public. The people who named themselves as the people’s representative just try to enrich their assets and they don’t care about the citizens. Citizens are told that the number of poverty is decreased. But the reality in the field doesn’t show the same.
“We can’t let it just happened. We have to move! We have to show the government that they don’t manage this country well. People are screaming because they can’t feed their family. Their cost isn’t enough to buy food. They are starving. But the elites don’t see this reality. This is the reason we act. To show the government so they can be sensitive about the poor people’s misery,” said the friend of mine.
And then I asked him again. Do the elites hear what you demand even you have been yelling in front of their house? He just smiled at me and said, there is no guarantee, but at least they try. It’s better than do nothing at all.
The things that people should know about university students in Indonesia: they do care about people. They want people get the best from their government. Give the prosperity to the people is all they ask. That is their way and expression to love Indonesia.
In every single demonstration they act, they always yell this motto.
Hidup Mahasiswa! Hidup Rakyat Indonesia! (Long live the university students! Long live the people of Indonesia!)
