Removal of fuel subsidy: A student viewpoint
The Goodluck Jonathan administration during his campaign promise economic reform but with the present situation it seems his administration does not consider youth as citizens of this nation because the standard of living he is attempting to reach is for the rich.
During this present administration, we(youth) have not enjoy any benefit rather we experience words like addition of PHCN tariff, increment in tuition fees, strike of ASUU, remover of fuel subsidy, bombing, and proposal to increase minimum account balance to 25,000 this are words that will harden the lives of students. Currently, without the removal of fuel subsidy, with just the little token amount added to minimum wages transport fare in some states have increase by 25%. If subsidy is now remove. What does government think will happen?
If they thought that the increment of corps member salary to 19800 will cater for the removal of subsidy. What a shame? We believe the are serving their fatherland but that don’t mean they should low the integrity of a degree holder to the extent of paying them less than $5 a day because some politicians who does have standard primary school certificate are being paid more than $110 per day. And how does government think students who do not receive any money from them will cope with it?
I never thought the present administration would be this kind of government. I believe in the likes of degree, master, and PhD owners, SAN, activist and journalists has our government we assume there is going to be great change in our nation because they have gone to school to be a nation builder. We are seeing people of this calibre around the world making great change.
I don’t want to realize that the remover of subsidy or addition will make jonathan achieve 6000 projects done, repair our refineries’ and promote good economy. During their studentship period, we were told they eat free meal, board free bus no tuition fees, free accommodation, right of speech and get employed after graduation, then government have not discover petroleum. Then the population of student is few but now that the population of student is high and the quantity of petroleum is higher government should check and balance not removal of subsidy.
One of the greatest problem facing Nigeria today is the menace of youth violence and what must of we youth is agitating on is that we have been deprived of our fundamental rights like employment, freedom of speech, education, and involvement of youth in politics. If the remover of subsidy is reached the economy will be harsh, tuition fee will increase which will make some students to quit and this will increase the act of murder, robbery, rape, riot, cultism, kidnapping, bombing, vandalism, prostitution and arson which has being the feature of this present democracy.
It is high time Nigeria leaders start giving back to their country. There should be less focus on what they can constantly get from the nation. They need to ask themselves, how much have I contributed to the growth nation that I have embezzled all their money. Their leadership should not be symbiotic or parasitic.
I don’t believe the remover of subsidy is the best way to attain better economy, different amount have been removed in the past regime, it does bring any positive result our economy it is just a way to encourage corruption. It is not in this administration miracle will happen that the remover of subsidy will be our economy messiah. Government need to think of other ways to achieve better economy but the most important one I will want them to note is that government loss billions of naira on corruption yearly. Why cant they eradicate corruption and reduce the salary of politicians they are there to serve because this are the two aspect disturbing Nigeria economy not subsidy. If this two are done Nigeria will assume the position jonathan want Nigeria to be.
Our leaders should not be a success seeker but above all a success creator
