Ex-boyfriend bathes woman with acid
Gladys Onwosorueye, a final year student of English Ahmadu Bello University Zaria woke up like every other student on this fateful day. The thought of finally graduating in a few weeks’s brought smile to her face. With just a week to her final exams, she probably had been planning to devote more time to her studies in order to graduate very well and maybe spend most part of her day in the library. She looks forward to the bright future ahead of her as a graduate of English and maybe eventually gets a job in a reputable media outfit. Little did she know what was going to befall her that fateful day.
She woke up full of life and vigor, took her bath, took time to do her make up like most ladies would, ate and set out for the days tasks. Only if she had known that the same beautiful face she looked at in the mirror will not be the same when next she looks herself in a mirror. Lying down on the sick bed would have been the last thing to cross her mind when she got up in the morning. She went for her
lectures in the morning and came back later in the afternoon to prepare for the evening mass of the
Catholic church. The mass finished around 7 pm. She together with a friend left the church with the intention of going to read as exams is fast approaching. Hardly had she left the churchpremises when her phone rang. Gladys picked the call and the voice at the other end of the receiver was that of James her ex- boyfriend.
James is a sociology graduate of the school. Unlike Gladys who many describe as extremely gentle and easy going, James on the other hand is described as an incredibly stubborn person; he is an
extrovert by all standards and often gets into trouble. Sources close to him also say he is a chain smoker and drinker. He recently finished the compulsory National Youth Service corps and was back to the school for his masters’ program. Sources say James and Gladys have been dating for more than five years since when he was still a student of the school. Their relationship went sour when Gladys' parents opposed her relationship with James. She then decided to heed to her parents advice of
leaving James and opted out of their relationship. This however did not go down well with James who
was angry and was provoked at Gladys decision.
Gladys later picked the call and was surprised to hear James’s voice at the end of the receiver. James asked of her where about, she initially declined but later told him where she was. In no time, James
was at the front of the Chapel gate. He met Gladys standing; he greeted her and told her to follow him
down a narrow road close to the Umar Suleiman hostel so they could talk about their sour relationship. Gladys refused but instead told James they should walk to the front of the hostel which is well-lit. James finally obliged to her decision. Sources said sooner than they got to the front of the hostel James removed a container from his back pocket and opened the container containing a liquid substance. He then poured the liquid substance on Gladys. Gladys did not immediately know what was happening to her, before she could say Jack Robinson, she started noticing pains on her head, and it took her some time before she discovered that what was poured on her was an acidic substance. She discovered that her head was hurting badly and she had pains on her head and face.
James was nowhere to be found as he took to his heels immediately. People that saw him running did
not immediately know the havoc he had committed said a knife fell off his pocket indicating probably he had intentions of killing her should she have followed him down the dark path. Gladys shouts drew people to the scene and before they could know what was wrong with her, she was already on the
ground shouting and writhing in pain. On discovering what havoc had been done to her, people standing nearby immediately looked for bags of pure water and emptied sachets of water on her to reduce the pain. She was then taken to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.
Some friends of Gladys who spoke to UPIU described her as an easy going person who cannot even hurt a fly.
“She is easy going, gentle and fun to be with” said a friend who does not want her name in print.
Another friend is Christain Idoga, a chemical engineering student. of 500L chemical engineering, he said, "I have known Gladys for a long time now and in fact we are family friends. The news really surprised me as I know her to be a very quiet lady, she cannot even hurt a fly, she is easy going and gentle to the core, and I still wonder how this dastardly thing could happen to her."
Gladys is currently receiving treatment at the ABU teaching Hospital intensive care unit while James,
is said to be on the run since the incident happened.
